Birmingham is little known abroad, as it has litte tourist attractions. It, however, is the second largest city in the UK, and it is quite industrial, with the presence of automobile factories. It is also the largest jewellery production centre in the country.

Birmingham is also known for multi-ethnicity. There is large community of Asian population, and has a thriving China Town in city centre. And now also Polish, Lituanian and Latovian immigrants are rapidly increasing. In the area where I live, for example, British white seems a minority.

Thanks to the presence of Asian population, Birmingham is famous for its curries, and known as the curry capital of Britain. A type of curry called "balti" is reputed to have been born in Birmingham, among the Bangladeshi and Punjabi immigrants. Balti can be found now anywhere in Britain, but not in India, Pakistan, or even in Bangladesh.

Apart from curry restaurants, Birmingham boasts two Michelin starred restaurants, "Jessica's" and "Simpson's", but "Jessica's" is about to close as its chef is opening his own restaurant.

Japanese food is under-represented and, although there are several Japanese restaurant, they are all owned by non-Japanese, and none of them looks authentic to the Japanese. In Harborne, there is a cafe that serves Japanese food in the evening.

The people of Birmingham are not the Birminghamians, but the Brummies, as the shortened name for Birmingham is Brum.
