The city of Birmingham UK - Birmingham is the most populous city which is located outside of London in the heart of West Midlands of England. It has a population of 1,016,800 (according to estimate made in 2008). On the west and south of city lie the Clent Hills, Lickey Hills and Walton Hills. The hills give an extensive view over the city. Birmingham Climate is classified as temperature maritime with maximum temperature being around 20 degrees during July. The minimum temperature experienced is approximately 4.5 degrees in January. Although extreme weather is rarely experienced, the city has experienced tornados in the past. During Industrial Revolution, Birmingham was the powerhouse. This fact earned it the title of ‘city of thousands trades’ or ‘workshop of the world’. Although the importance of Birmingham as an industrial city has declined, it has now been developed into a commercial center. Not only is it a popular business community but a top 20 living community. West Midlands - The West Midlands is an official English region, covering the western half of the area officially known as the midlands. West Midlands contains Birmingham as one or its chief locations, which is also the second most populous British city. The West Midlands conurbation is also a part of the West Midlands region. The city of Coventry is also a part of the conurbation. The river Severn, the longest river in the UK traverses the West Midlands region South east wards. The Ironbridge Gorge, a UNESCO world heritage site as the birthplace of industrial revolution is also located in the West Midlands region. The Warwickshire county of the West midlands
region is also the place where Stratford on Avon, the birthplace of William
Shakespeare is located. The total population of the West Midlands region accounts to almost 11% of the total British population. Warwickshire is home to the town of Stratford upon Avon, the birthplace of poet William Shakespeare.
The Black Country in the UK - The Black Country is an area to the west and north of Birmingham and east and south of Wolverhampton. It became one of the most industrialized in the nation by late 19th century. It is believed that the area earned its name from the level of air pollution which was produced by the heavy industries. Some historians suggest that this name came into existence even before the industrial revolution. The heavy industry which was once the heart of the Black Country is almost gone. The coal mining industry came to an end in 1968. Also, with the Clean Air Legislation the country was no longer ‘Black’. The black country is also popular due its distinct dialect. The dialect has a slight variation in various parts of the region. Despite the fact that it is close to Birmingham the majority of the Black’s Country are proud of having a unique identity’s as being separate region. The Black Country is also known for its distinctive dialect.
